Seagate’s OneTouch hard drives are a popular choice with many users, and the company has launched this new SSD version.Īvailable in black, silver or blue, the OneTouch SSD is the smallest and lightest portable drive we’ve ever seen.

That combination of speed, compact design and competitive pricing makes the Portable SSD a great option for anyone that needs a portable back-up drive for their Mac or iPad. LaCie quotes read and write speeds of 1000MB/s, but repeated tests with the BlackMagic speed test app showed the Portable SSD comfortably cruising along at around 1,300MB/s with no trouble at all. The Portable SSD has a solid, sturdy design that should be able to cope with a few bumps in a backpack or briefcase, and it performs very well too.

LaCie hasn’t cut any other corners, though. The drive has a single USB-C interface, and includes a USB-C cable, but the low cost means that there are no added extras, such as an adaptor for older Macs that have USB-A (3.2) connectors. It’s smaller and lighter than previous drives from LaCie too, measuring just 10.6mm thick, 50mm wide, and 80mm long, and it weighs a mere 45g, so it’s ideal for carrying around with your MacBook or iPad when you’re travelling. Rather than the sharply angular corners and edges of its predecessor, the compact Portable SSD has smoothly round corners – perhaps following Apple’s recent fetish for rounded corners on icons in Big Sur and Monterey. However, LaCie has also released this new Portable SSD as a less expensive alternative for people who don’t need James Bond levels of security.Īvailable with 500GB, 1TB or 2TB of storage, the Portable SSD has a new design too.

and Apple's SSDs utilize TRIM as well. The LaCie Mobile SSD that we reviewed last year isn’t available anymore – although there is a new model called the Mobile SSD Secure coming soon, which provides additional security and data-encryption features for professional users. I can only say that I still enable TRIM just in case. Some may ask of TRIM is necessary these days since most SSDs use proprietary garbage collection.

I just make it a habit when I update my system.
EXTERNAL SOLID STATE HARD DRIVE FOR MAC UPGRADE
1 upgrade to OS X you will have to enable TRIM once again. Not sure what TRIM does? See this Wikipedia article. I would also recommend using Trim Enabler to enable TRIM on your new SSD. The first thing you’ll want to do is to go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your new SSD as your startup drive. You’re almost finished… Now that you have your cloned SSD in your hard drive bay, you should be able to hold down the option key and boot from the SSD. Be sure to visit the OWC video installation page, or the numerous videos on YouTube, about installing the drive into your MacBook Pro. Then just boot from the enclosed drive and use Disk Utility to format the SSD and clone the contents of your hard drive onto your SSD as noted above.

Alternately, you can just go ahead and install your SSD into your MacBook Pro (endless number of DIY videos online – see OWC’s Installation Videos - ) and put your hard drive into the USB enclosure and boot from it. You’ll know in a few seconds if your clone was successful.

After the clone is complete, restart your computer whilst holding down the option key and select the SSD as the boot drive. If you are running Lion or Mountain Lion, choose the option to copy the Recovery Partition to the SSD. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your hard drive to the SSD. Use Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder) to format the SSD, erasing it and formatting as “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” with a single GUID partition. We’ll examine both ways here: Install the SSD into your USB enclosure and plug it up. The second is simply to install the SSD into your hard drive bay and your old hard drive into your enclosure and boot from the enclosure. The first is to install the SSD into your enclosure and make your clone before installing the SSD. From a thread in : Start the process… There are two ways to go about getting the data from your old drive to your SSD.
